Peak

School of Interior Design
Toronto Metropolitan University
Year-End Show Installation

The interplay of light and fabric transcends the boundaries of the interior to expand with the exterior. Housed on the third-floor office hallway, northeast corner, exposed to natural light, we introduce sheers wrapping the surrounding walls not as a physical entity but as a metaphorical canvas that unfolds a story through light, space, and material.

Peak harnesses and reshapes the light through the spotlights; this installation uses fabric to embody unfolding. inspired by the organic and fluidity of fabric and the story each crease and fold of a garment produces. The motion cannot stay static and invites interaction and exploration, engaging in an intimate spatial experience.

Peak provides a poetic expression of light and fabric, unfolding a tale of creativity and illumination through the fleeting beauty of the fabric.

Lighting and Shadow Casts

Each tapestry was carefully sourced from material fabricators as scraps to prevent material waste. To reuse these sheer pieces, they were measured and cut in triangular shapes and stretched from corner to corner to demonstrate fluidity in material and reflect tension and motion. The transparency of the material allows interesting shadow casts to be performed while moving through the hallway, where the fabric moves to the human circulation. These are captured due to the downlighting from existing potlights in the school’s hallway.
